Our core philosophy is to teach through full immersion. English is used at all times in the classroom as well as during much of the day. All of our teachers are native English speakers with bachelor degrees or above. Many have teaching credentials or qualifications from the US, Canada, England, and other native English speaking countries. Children learn very quickly in a full immersion environment. Teachers and students establish different ways to communicate when the student is still new to learning English. When complex communication is required (such as during discipline situations or sorting out an argument between students), Chinese staff are there to help. However we believe that it is much easier for both the teacher and the children if there is only one authority figure in the classroom. Aside from language skills, Jumpstart also seeks to teach students basic manners and discipline. We want our students to enjoy school, learn how to play and interact constructively with each other, and have fun. We also expect the children to acquire basic manners such as saying please, listening to teachers, asking
to be excused from class, etc.

Kindergarten (Jumpstart) Jumpstart breaks the school year into two semesters. New semesters typically start at the beginning of September and March. The first semester runs roughly from September 1st to February 28th with a two weeks break for the Chinese New Year holiday. The exact timing of the holiday depends on which dates the Chinese New Year falls. The second semester runs from about March 1st to August 15th. There is a total of 4‐weeks paid vacation each year.
Kindergarten Hours Jump Start has 4 levels of full‐day kindergarten classes for children aged 2‐6 (Jumpstart). The hours are from 8:50am – 12pm and 1:50pm – 5pm Mon‐Fri. There is about a 2 hour lunch break in between where many of our teachers like to catch up on errands, prepare for classes and/or rest.
Elementary (Headstart) Headstart breaks the year into two semesters as well. New semesters start at the beginning of September and February. The first semester runs roughly from the end of August to February with a two week break for the winter holiday. The second term runs from February to the end of June. There are normally winter programs during the winter vacation for 2 ‐ 3 weeks; and summer programs for 2 months in July and August.
Elementary Hours Headstart has afternoon classes from 1:30pm – 4:30pm, and evening classes from 4:45pm – 6:45pm. Afternoon classes are made up primarily of 1st and 2nd grade students who come to Headstart after finishing a half‐day at their public schools. Evening classes are comprised mostly of 3rd‐5th grade students who come to Head Start after completing a full day at their public school. Starting from 6th grade onwards, most students find their workload too heavy to continue taking on extra English classes. Classes for elementary school students are only held in the afternoon and evening. The number of classes offered differs from branch to branch and based on enrollment.
Class Sizes Class sizes are kept smaller at Jumpstart and Headstart in order to allow teachers to attend to each child’s individual needs. Classes average around 12 students and go as high as 16 or as low as 4. Placement is based on both age and ability level. In certain cases, it will be necessary to mix children whose ages are more than a year apart.
Jumpstart uses a mixture of professional teacher’s guides (Scott Foresman), in‐house materials, and our teacher’s creativity. The school supplies a full curriculum to cover a significant portion of the class, but we also give the teacher flexibility. We realize that every teacher has their own distinctive style and we highly value the creativity and unique set of skills each teacher can bring to the class. Teachers can draw from our library of textbooks, story books, games, songs, art projects, and other materials to supplement lessons to meet the specific needs of their students and lessons. Headstart uses curriculum from the Scott Foresman series textbooks and teacher’s guides. The set curriculum gives our teachers clear direction and expectations. The teacher is given flexibility in how to teach each lesson as well as selecting supplementary materials to further strengthen their lessons.
